Conservation area

In July 2012, the Board submitted a brief to MRC Vallée-de-la-Gatineau (MRCVG) proposing the establishment of a strict conservation zone. The entire target area is located east of Little Cedar Lake.

The general objectives of the Association regarding the proposed area are to:

  • Ensure the protection of existing springs and watercourses with a view to conserving healthy watersheds, in order to ensure the preservation of the quality and quantity of water flowing into Little Cedar Lake and Lac Richer;
  • Promote the restoration of the forest to its original state through optimal management of deforested areas in 2008 and 2009, in order to promote biological diversity and achieve maximum economic value at maturity;
  • Ensure the full protection of the slow-growing cedars in the wetlands west of Lac Richer, essential to the survival of the Lac Richer ecosystem;
  • Limit the existing road vehicle period of access created in the east-west axis for the transport of wood during clear-cutting in 2008–2009, in order to limit the amount of vehicles travelling in the area and impacting the environment through material and waste pollution; and
  • Maintain and develop a few "ecological" trails one metre wide or less, especially in the east-west axis, with the preservation of natural obstacles that may discourage the penetration of ATVs and other motorized vehicles into the more sensitive areas of the territory, particularly into wetlands located in the area west of Lac Richer.

In parallel with the efforts of the Association, the Government of Québec decided to classify 571.2 ha as a protected area for Virginia deer—Aire de confinement du cerf de Virginie. There are specific measures for the management of this area to protect the habitat of the Virginia deer. In 2016, signage was installed at the main entrances of the protected area to inform users of best practices.
